In June, 2010, Eastern Shore Global Missions will make our next mission trip to Africa. Our team is comprised of nearly 40 fellow Christians who are compelled to bring comfort and assistance to the continent of Africa. Most of our members attend services at Christ Church in Easton, Maryland and Christ Church in Kent Island, Maryland. This trip, we're also being joined by a young missionary who lives in Australia!
The idea of travelling to Africa came from a member of Joanne's Core youth group, after he saw the documentary Invisible Children during our Gulf Coast (2006) mission trip. It's a documentary which tells the story about how the Lords Resistance Army was abducting children and forcing them to wage war against the Ugandan government. Upon his return, he felt a calling to offer service to the children of Africa. Joanne made the promise that if he was an active participant in her ministry through high school, our 2010 trip would take us to Africa.
When our 2010 mission trip was announced, our church community displayed strong feelings towards the idea. While many people were immediately excited about the prospect, a lot of parents were understandably worried and fearful for the safety and well being of their children. Over the course of time, much prayer, research, and discussion led us to believe that we could safely pursue our mission by sticking to the more secure, developed areas of Africa and partnering with local missionaries who already had contacts in the community.
During our planning process, our call for adult chaperones to participate with our Youth Group led to an amazing response. Not only was there strong interest by the member of Christ Church Easton, a large contingent from Christ Church Kent Island felt the calling, as well! Another difference in this group of missionaries is their age. In year's past, we've taken mostly high school and college students along with a few adult chaperones. This team features missionaries of all ages - from children in middle school travelling with their parents to active and adventurous retirees.
We'll be actively working to raise the tens of thousands of dollars necessary to make our mission trip a reality throughout 2009 and we will continue into the first half of 2010. If you feel the calling to help us make our journey, please check our calendar for our fundraising events, or consider making a tax deductible contribution to our team via ChipIn.
